The pillars of justice loomed steadily over the bustling hypocrisy of Standard Street where business men and beggars fought for standing room and desert swine was slung at dangerous rates by unscrupulous cart vendors. Billy Dean paused a moment as he reached the perilous steps leading up to the Roland City Courtroom. He quickly glanced over his shoulder and noted the four goons still pushing their way through the crowd. In a panic he started moving up the stairs.

"Billy!", oh good! his defense attorney, Jake Bradshaw - the man who was going to get him out of this stinking mess - was waiting for him at the landing by the courtroom entrance.

Jake met him half way down the stairs and shook his hand, cautiously glancing down at the crowd.

"Hurry, let's get inside", Bradshaw insisted, "They can't cross onto hallowed ground."

The two men brisked their pace towards the doors as the goons approached the base of the steps. Billy glanced back once more to note they had stopped and the leader had pulled out a cell phone. The towering henchman met Billy's eyes with an angry determination as he spoke in to the phone. Billy shuddered a moment before turning and following Bradshaw into the courthouse.

The halls of justice expanded before Jake and Billy as they moved into the building, the hum of discussion echoing around them like hornet hives. At any given time there were at least five cases going on in the court house, not including civic matters, but on this day there as an extraordinary hustle about the place. The case had made headline news when the public defender was found shredded in a paper mill four nights earlier. Jakes girlfriend had protested him taking on the case, but Jake Bradshaw wasn't shook. He knew that he was the only lawyer hard core enough to defend Billy Dean.

As they walked towards the court room they were sidelined by Marybeth Simmons and a camera crew. News crews were not allowed beyond the perimeter of the building, but the sly channel 6 anchor had secret moves that nobody knew. What a pain in the ass.

She held a microphone up and prepared to ask a question, but Jake smacked it away and tried to move around them. Shit - blocked by another cameraman as Simmons produced a second microphone.

"Mr. Bradshaw, are you concerned about your safety?"

"No! BUT YOU SHOULD BE", he brought his boot up and laid it in to her stomach, sending her reeling against her sound guy. With moments to spare Jake turned to Billy, "Come one lets go".

They were off down the hall before Marybeth could recover her stance.

She straightened out her blouse and glared down the hall, "Fuck sake."

The state prosecutor loomed amid the frontrunners of the courtroom, spectators cheering on her hideous deceptions from the stands. Billy Dean was happy to have Jake by his side as they entered through the dangerous double doors at the back of the courtroom. The pews were half filled with onlookers and judge Hamen Lipton surveyed to procession from his fancy raised throne. The judge had been at it for over fifty years, and the years had not been kind to him. His disheveled face looked like it had been pummeled with a meat tenderizer and his robes were stained with what Billy had to assume was semen.

The judge struggled to push himself to his feet and cast a welcoming glare in Bradshaws direction as Jake approached the bench and shook his hand. They exchanged pleasantries but got down to business fast in whispered exchanges. Jake nodded sternly in response to some hushed revelation and glowered back and prosecutor Jane Fonda before returning to his clients corner.

He spoke quietly to Billy, aware that Marybeth Simmons had appeared at the back of the courtroom like a banshee, "The judge tells me that prosecutor Fonda will file for full penetration. It looks like we are going to have to use the defense that we planned. Did you memorize the lines?"

Billy nodded nervously. He hoped that he wouldn't forget what he was to say under the pressure of cross examination, but he had certainly studied the plan hard enough.

Jake caught the sense of nerves in his client, "Listen, with your testimony the case has a chance. These people don't hire goons for no reason. Making it here today was half the battle - but you can't shit yourself up there. Just stick to the script and we can stick the landing."

"Ok.. no I can do this."

"I know you can bud", Jake patted Billy on the shoulder and looked back to Jane Fonda, who was looking thoughtfully in their direction. Her client, Lord Kimmenski of the Dune Riders stood tall in ceremonial battle gear, staring forward toward nothing in particular.

As the court commenced there was a cheer from the stands and someone threw popcorn. The man was quickly beaten by the court-guards and removed from the room. Judge Hamen stood tall and profound in the slight of his deranged visage. He looked the courtroom over and raised his hand to hush the crowd.
"Noble lawmen!", he addressed the attourneys, "The case before you is a rancid one, and one I wish to burn from my memory before the day is night. Let's get this over with!", suddenly turning to Jane Fonda and roaring, "HAS THE PROSECUTION PREPARED A STATEMENT!?",

A veteran of the court, Jane remained unphased and tilted her brimmed had casually before moving to the center podium to speak, “Your majesty, we are gathered here today to bring forth the charges of damnation upon the defendant. We shall prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Billy Dean was the sole proprietor of the siege engine that laid waste to Lord Kimmenski’s fortress on the gulf coast three fortnights past. We will move to bring forth charges of Seigery, conspiracy to commit Seigery and property damage over $1000. In addition we are filing a wrongful damages suite for the deaths of six hundred fifty five pikemen and ninety eight battalioneers for the value of one Six Million dollar man, to be bionically enhanced at a lab of our choosing.”

Jake Bradshaw snarled under his breath at the outlandish request, but knew that Jane Fonda would pull something like this and kept his cool.

Jane continued, “Not only will the forensic evidence will show that Billy Dean was operating the siege engine at the time of the attack, but we have evidence of transaction records dating back to 2010 implicating Billy Dean in the wholesale purchase of siege engine parts and labor. In addition, we have a series of expert and character witnesses as well as eye witnesses that will collaborate the story.” She turned and locked eyes with Jake, who matched her stare with angry precision, “Mr. Bradshaw, I think you bit off more than you can chew this time.”

Annoyed and somber, Jake set hit pita pocket down on the desk. He stood quietly and held an index finger up to the judge to request a moment’s pause. Looking back to Jane, he stepped out to meet her at the podium. With only a few feet to spare he faced down the state prosecutor as he had many times before. They glared eye to eye like porcelain statues for a mild eternity before Jake turned to face the judge.
“Your majesty”, he began, “You will find my client guilty of all charges, but not for the reasons anyone expects. It is with the utmost malaise that I must inform my esteemed opponent that the perpetrator of these crimes was not, in fact, my client, but my client – FROM THE FUTURE.”

There was a gasp from the stands that Jake knew to be Marybeth Simmons without even looking. Surely she was scribbling madly in her notebinder.

“Objection!”, Jane Fonda threw up her arms like she didn’t even care (though I fact she did) and turned to address Jake directly, fire bleeding through her hazel eyes, “What are you trying to pull, you son of a bitch?”

Jake could only laugh at the aggressive stance, but calmly continued his statement addressing Judge Hamen, “Your majesty, I propose to provide evidence that my client is as much a victim in this as Mr. Kimmenski, that a dangerous future version of himself has come through the south-Colorado rift and was in fact the person who orchestrated the attack on Mr. Kimmenski’s fort. Furthermore, I have reason to believe that my client is being targeted by associates of his future self and is in very real and present danger. Although I have yet to discern the motives behind these aggressions, it is clear there is more at play here than it first appears.”
